IBM has launched its Spyre Accelerator, a specialized chip engineered to enhance artificial intelligence processing while maintaining enterprise-grade security. The 5nm technology chip features 32 accelerator cores and 25.6 billion transistors, packaged in a 75-watt PCIe FORM factor. Availability begins October 28 for z17/LinuxONE systems, with Power11 server support following in December.

The architecture enables scalable deployment—up to 48 cards in mainframe configurations or 16 in Power servers—allowing concurrent execution of multiple AI models. Notably, Spyre originated from IBM's Research AI Hardware Center before evolving into a commercial product designed for on-premises generative AI and agentic model workloads.
